Since leaving his semi-lucrative job as a car salesman to pursue a career in music (a decision he only sometimes regrets), Gareth Montanarello has established himself as a versatile bassist within the music communities of Arizona.
Gareth earned his Bachelor of Music in Double Bass Performance at the Fred Fox School of Music with Dr. Philip Alejo. Originally a cellist, he switched to bass just before graduating high school and received instruction from Mike Kazepides and Dr. John Ebinger of the Phoenix Symphony, along with additional jazz study from bassists Mike King and Will Goble. He has performed with the Symphony of the Southwest and the Arizona Symphony, in masterclasses for Diana Gannet (U. of Michigan) and Isaac Trapkus (NY Phil), and he was featured on Contrabass Conversations, a weekly podcast run by Jason Heath.
When he isn’t playing music, Gareth can be found cooking something pretentious, not getting lost on a hiking trail, or enjoying time with his family and friends.
He also owns doublebassprints.com and wears too many shirts with basses on them.
